Server Maintenance - October 22nd 2023

Planned Server Maintenance - October 22nd 2023

On October 22nd 2023 9am UTC, pavlovia.org migrated to a new, more powerful server. We can report that there was no down-time at all in the migration, but if you have any studies that were active at any point on that Sunday then:

  • Some of the data collected during the migration may take time to become visible in the project (it may be collected on the old hardware but we will then copy over any such data to the new server). This is because, the change of server address has to be updated across DNS servers around the world, and this process can take several hours
  • We would strongly recommend you check any running studies that you may have after the migration is complete. Check, for instance, that its status (RUNNING/PILOTTING) is as-expected.

Hello - I have a study that started running on Friday, and my participants are unable to access it this morning. This is a longitudinal study with invited participants on Prolific. It is just stuck on “initializing the experiment”. I also get the same error when I try to run it in pilot mode.

This is really unfortunate. Nothing below says that the experiments won’t be able to run.

Please advise.

Best,
Michael

Hi Michael,

Sorry to hear you are having this difficulty I am flagging this to our Chief Technical Officer @apitiot who may be able to investigate further, - can you please share with us the link to the pavlovia project?

Thanks
Becca

Thanks for the quick reply. Here is the link: https://run.pavlovia.org/trincoll/exoexponlinev7f2

I have had two people message and say it is stuck in the initializing experiment phase.

Dear @trincoll ,

Thank you for the link. I have just looked into the matter and fixed the issue, which was indeed linked to the server move and, more precisely, to a missing library plugin (which we needed for the 2021 version).
With my apologies for the mishap! Your experiment is now running without problems.
Cheers,

Alain

Hi Rebecca,

Several participants have gotten a “413 request entity too large” error message. I haven’t experienced this issue before. I’m wondering if it’s due to the server migration. Any idea what could be causing this problem?

Thanks,

Adam

Hi Adam,

Sorry to hear that you are experiencing this issue, I am bringing in our Chief Technical Officer @apitiot - who might be able to advise further. Please could you share with us the link to the pavlovia project?

Thanks!
Becca

Dear @abarnas ,

I sorted the issue earlier this morning and got confirmation that experiments with large results can indeed upload them again.
With my apologies,

Alain

Hello. I have updated my experiment this morning, I tried to make a new folder to keep the older version, but It still pointing to old address. I decided to fork the project from another user, but the new folder is empty and when I try to run the experiment or changing its status I got the next issue:

" >>> [500] “unable to pull the project from the GitLab repository: Cmd(‘git’) failed due to: exit code(128)\n cmdline: git pull\n stderr: ‘fatal: refusing to merge unrelated histories’” ( #None )
If the error persists, contact Pavlovia’s administrator."

Is this error related with the server migration? I will appreciate your help or advice.

Hello @felparcor ,

This is indeed related to the migration and experiments being deleted / recreated at inopportune moments. Can you share your experiment repository and I’ll sort this out for you.

Hi Becca/Alain,

I’ve been running an online experiment for a month and I’ve just realized I’m not being able to access it on Pavlovia after the migration. The experiment id is 338361. Would it be possible for you to look into it?

Thanks in advance,
Miguel

Hello @jimenezbravo ,

I just impersonated you and could access the experiment without issue.
It might be a browser cache issue on your end. I would suggest you log out, clear your browser cache, and give it another go.
Do let me know if you still cannot access the experiment and I’ll look into it further of course.
Best wishes,

Alain

Hi Alain, I am experiencing the same issue reported by user trincoll - my study has been running successfully for some time, but since the server migration, users get stuck on the “initialising the experiment” screen. I see in your response that a library plugin is needed, but I’m not sure how to troubleshoot the issue myself. Might you be able to take a look for us? Our experiment is at phonetic_awareness_15 [PsychoPy]. Thank you in advance!

Hello @Tara_McAllister ,

I have just sorted this out for you. My apologies for the trouble.
Incidentally, you are using a very, very old version of the library. I would highly recommend you upgrade your experiments whenever that is convenient for you.
Best wishes,

Alain

Hi Alain,

I am experiencing the same issue! I am running a longitudinal study, and have had a number of participants note they are unable to complete the experiment since the migration. When I myself pilot the survey, I also see that it is stuck on the “initializing the experiment” page. I’ve tried to figure out the issue, but am unsure how to proceed. Would you be able to assist with this?

Our task is: LANT_W2E [PsychoPy]

Thank you!

Warmly,
Samantha

Hello @Samantha ,

I have just fixed that for you.
And, similarly, I would highly recommend you upgrade your experiments when possible (I understand that you may not want to update a longitudinal study, of course).
Best wishes,

Alain

Hi Alain, I appreciated your help with our issue (script phonetic_awareness_15 [PsychoPy] stuck at ‘initialising the experiment’ screen after server migration) in November. It worked for us for a period of time after your fix, but this week it returned to the state where it gets stuck at ‘initialising the experiment.’ In your previous message you mentioned that we were using an old version of the library and should consider updating, but I wasn’t able to figure out exactly what the library was or how I should go about updating it. Might you be able to give me any further instruction on how to resolve this issue in a more permanent way? Thank you!

Hello @Tara_McAllister ,

The fault is mine on this occasion. I made a number of changes on the server at the week-end. Regrettably one of them, meant to tighten security, appears to be causing difficulties with older experiments. I have now sorted this and your experiment is running again.
With my apologies!

Alain
