Pavlovia currently down

We are aware that pavlovia.org and gitlab.pavlovia.org are currently not responding to and we are investigating the cause. You can follow the status at status.pavlovia.org

Hello,

Would the data of ongoing sessions be saved?

Best,
Ido Ben Artzi

The issue has been resolved and all systems are back up and running.

No, I’m afraid data collection would not have been possible in the period 06:44 (UTC) to 08:23 (UTC)

Apologies for any inconvenience the outage caused.

Best wishes,
Jon

It was down two days ago too, I guess, are these isolated maintenance jobs or are these happening frequently these days

I’m not sure if this is related to the recent outage, but I noticed an issue after the service was restored. I synced some changes to my task about an hour ago, and I can see that they’ve been updated correctly on GitLab. However, the changes don’t seem to show up when I launch the experiment in either Pilot or Run mode.

I tested this with a simple change to the instruction text, but it still shows the old version. I also tried creating a new project to see if that would work, but I couldn’t create one either.

Anyone else experiencing a similar issue?

Yes, I had the same issue, and I thought I would try deleting the project and re-creating it, only to find out that I cannot create projects on Pavlovia anymore.

I have just done the following as a little test:

  1. In the Builder (PsychoPy Studio), create a single textbox component in the default routine and save as “basicTest” in a folder with the same name.
  2. Builder → Pavlovia → Create new project → a project’s path (username/basicTest) appears as expected just above Pavlovia in the Builder.
  3. First click on Sync triggers “Error invoking remote method ‘git.pull’: HttpError: HTTP Error: 401 Unauthorized”
  4. Double-clicking on the project’s path opens the project URL but the page only shows “No information is available for this experiment. Either it does not exist or you do not have access to it.”
  5. Going to Gitlab, a “basicTest” project folder does exist and contains basicTest.psyexp
  6. Click Sync a 2nd time seems to work: no error in the Builder, and basicTest.js and index.html are added to the Gitlab folder.
  7. But Going back to Pavlovia, the “basicTest” page still shows “No information is available for this experiment. Either it does not exist or you do not have access to it.”. And “basicTest” is not shown on the dashboard.

are these happening frequently these days

  1. On 18 Oct there was a planned major upgrade to the system, requiring migration of substantial quantities of data and various upgraded systems. That was a planned upgrade with prior warning by email and an outage that lasted for a few hours
  2. On 3 Nov there was a planned but very brief outage of only the gitlab server while we applied a security patch (data collection unaffected) that lasted under 1 minute. This type of upgrade is going to be necessary roughly every 2 weeks from now on - security patch
  3. This morning was not planned, but caused by a software component that failed and caused the data-collection server to stop communicating over the standard ports. This outage did prevent data collection, for a little under 2 hours. We are currently investigating why this happened but it looks like it was related to the system upgrade on 18 Oct and a package that is not fully compatible with the latest version of Ubuntu that we switched to that day

So, in answer to your question about are these more common these days, we don’t expect to have outages like this morning any more frequently than we have done historically.

Outages while we apply security patches may be more frequent than in the past, given the increased security needs of our users and the battle against AI-supported hackers, but these are typically very brief.

@fmar could you try creating a new study again now? I believe the issue is fixed

Yes, it works again:) Thank you!
