Psychopy on Big Sur on mac

I am also having this problem - Cannot open PsychoPy3 (2020.2.1) on Big Sur and just shows an error saying I need to terminate. When I click into the console, no errors are displayed.

The weirdest part is I was using PsychoPy completely fine yesterday, but upon trying to start it today am having no luck at all. I have also tried searching for the userPrefs.cfg and appData.cfg and can’t locate them anywhere on my computer. Using this command did not work:

Does anyone have any idea why I don’t seem able to find these files or anything else I could try?

@milsandhills try using this command in Terminal

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE;killall Finder

This enables you to see hidden files. You can then find a .psychopy3 folder in your home directory. that’s where you’ll find the config files

@milsandhills I think you are looking in the wrong place. When you are in your home folder, you should then see lots of greyed out folders and files beginning with .
One of these should be the .psychopy3 folder. Do you get this?

@Marc_Buehner I have attached some images, the first showing where the ‘home’ folder is located, the second what happens when I click into ‘home’ - there doesn’t seem to be anything in there? Could I still be looking in the wrong place?

that ‘home’ folder is either an attached network drive or some other mounted drive. You are in the wrong place. You need to go to Users, and there will be your home folder. It is almost certainly not called ‘home’ but whatever your username on your Mac is (mine is called marcbuehner for example)

Psychopy3 still not working on my 2 Big Sur Machines (laptop and desktop). This time I had a crash log, which I had wanted to paste here, but the text was too long and I cannot upload it as a text file.
Any suggestions what I could do with it (assuming it would be helpful)?

Ah, glad you got a crash log, but I’m surprised it’s too big to past here. How big are we talking and where did it come from? Maybe you could just post the last 10 lines or so to give a flavour?

hI @Jon – the file is only 98k. The issue was that it has too many lines to paste.
I think the last 10 lines from the log I have won’t be that useful bc they list attached USB devices and general info about the computer.

I see, that’s coming from the system console and that’s pretty impenetrable to me as well I’m afraid (and contains lots of messages that are nothing to do with the PsychoPy crash)

My best advice for you at the moment is to trash (or move, for now) your preferences/app-settings and restart since that apparently worked for the other user above.

In terminal, do something like

mv ~/.psychopy3 ~/.psychopy3backup

and then try starting psychopy again. If that does work then I’ll want to examine the files to see what was causing the issue for future checks

HI @Jon. I had already deleted the config files and restarted but to no avail. I’m just on my laptop and checked again and now there are no config files anymore. However, I now do have an last_app_load.log file. Would that help?

And you’re certain this is version 2020.2.10 that you’re trying to load? That is exactly the error message from 2020.1.x that I spent many days fixing to make 2020.2 :-/ For most people if Big Sur 2020.2 does not now show this message. Could you fetch a fresh copy just to be certain and make sure it’s that new one you open? Thanks.

There is still an issue that for some reason the app just sits in the Dock and you have to then click on it before the windows actually appear. I haven’t worked out what that’s about, but I’m guessing it’s something to do with the new mac Gatekeeper

update: @Jon , I realised that both of my machines had two versions of PsychoPy on it, one just called Psychopy, the other Psychopy3. It appears that the standalone install doesn’t work unless the earlier versions are removed. I deleted both instances and re-installed and now it does work…

Glad you got it working, although I’m not sure why there was any interaction. When you open PsychoPy, how do you do it? Do you double-click a file or open the app in the dock, or something else?

OK, and if there were actually 2 versions on your machine, I suspect that the app icon in the dock must just have been pointing to your other installation rather than the newer (Big Sur compatible install). I’m going to mark this mystery as solved!
