Participants started receiving error upon completing the study

Hi there, I am currently collecting data on Pavlovia through Prolific, and about halfway through collection the data seems to have stopped saving and partcipants started messaging me that they encountered this error:

Unfortunately we encountered the following error:
when terminating the experiment
when flushing participant’s logs for experiment: EOresearch/psychopy_exp_annotation_bfi
when uploading participant’s log for experiment: EOresearch/psychopy_exp_annotation_bfi
SyntaxError: Unexpected token ‘<’, "
Try to run the experiment again. If the error persists, contact the experiment designer.

Does anyone know what could have caused this error to start occurring? and what I might do prevent it so I can avoid this extra expense during data collection again?

Do you know how many participants started your study?

We had an outage which started around 10:55am today due to unusually high server load. It seems to be okay now but it’s possible that one or more researchers launched surveys with very high numbers of participants at the same time.

Hi wakecarter, thanks for your response. So it was 2 studies running simultaneously with 10 people each, although I cap it so only 5 can take each at once. 10.55 aligns with the time I was experiencing the errors so I imagine that could have been the cause. Do you think I would be able to continue data collection now? Also do you think there could be any chance of recovering the submitted data? It doesn’t appear when i download the session results.

Hi Emily,

I think you were just unfortunate. We haven’t had any more issues for the past hour so you should be safe to retry. However, I don’t think that there is any chance of recovering data if you can’t find log or data files in the repository nor by downloading from your project page.

Best wishes,

Wakefield

In case anyone else experienced the same issue, even though they didn’t appear in the project page download, happily the csv files had saved to my Gitlab repository. So it is worth it to check both places!
