Data not saving and issue accessing pavlovia gitlab

jsPsych version (e.g. 7.3.1): Participants are seeing this error after completing our online experiment. I am also seeing the below error when accessing pavlovia. Data saved successfully for another participant at 2pm EST today. I am wondering what is occuring?

I also see this err when i try to git pull to my local machine.

remote: GitLab is not responding

fatal: unable to access 'https://gitlab.pavlovia.org/redacted/redacted_experiment_name.git/': The requested URL returned error: 502

I am wondering what the issue is and if there is any way to retrieve the data that has been lost?

Dear all,

We are currently fighting off extremely aggressive AI bots, and testing/deploying various mitigating counter-measures.

I am hoping we will have it all under control very soon but, in the mean time, you may experience some issues with access to repositories or collected data. For instance, it is currently not possible to access experiment data on gitlab.pavlovia.org. This is temporary and is in place to stop those AI bots from exploding the server load.

I am very sorry for the inconvenience.

I would urge you not to inactivate your experiments as it is very likely that participant data are on the pavlovia.org back-end but possibly not synced with gitlab.pavlovia.org. Inactivating your experiments would wipe them out.

As soon as the storm is over, we will sync all of those repositories automatically.

Again, I apologise for the kerfuffle. We do live in wondrous AI times…

Could this also explain the problem I am currently have in making an experiment public? I am making a toy experiment to try to troubleshoot audio troubles, but when I try to make the experiment public (instead of private) so that I can share it, it tells me that the avatar is too big (I didn’t have any avatar set, and trying to set an avatar is also not working) and then won’t let me change the status to public.

Thank you very much for the update. This may explain the issue we are currently experiencing. Since June 9, we have not been able to access the collected data, even through the Download Results button on the Pavlovia project page. Our experiment was developed directly in JavaScript/jsPsych, but it does use jsPsychPavlovia . Could the current Pavlovia/GitLab issue also affect data access through the Download Results button in this case? Also, do you have an estimate of how long this issue is likely to last?

@KateT we briefly turned off the ability for users to make experiment files public (and this restriction may come back) although this should be possible again now. Note that

  • (you probably know this already) your experiment doesn’t have to be public for participants to run. Public relates to the availability of the files/data
  • setting your project to “internal” is pretty much “public” but requires the user to create an account. This might well be what we end up having to use if the bots are this persistent (and depending how well captcha methods work to block them). We’d prefer to keep things fully open but public to registered users may be the only fair compromise

Hi,
last week many of my participants have experienced the same error for 2 experiments I run from Prolific.

I cannot see the data of their sessions neither by dowloading from Pavlovia interface, neither pullingthe commits.

  1. is there any chance to retrieve the data?
  2. I want to run multiple more session, is the status of the servers safe now?
