Applying gamma from the Monitor Center

Hi everyone,

I’m experiencing an issue where gamma correction configured in Monitor Center doesn’t seem to be applied to the display output in PsychoPy 2024.1.4.

Setup:

  • PsychoPy version: 2024.1.4

  • Monitor: Eizo CS2731 (calibrated)

  • OS: Windows

  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER

I have verified that gamma values load correctly but the gamma correction from Monitor Center is not being applied to the actual display output (as measured with PR670). When I manually apply gamma correction before setting colors, it seem to produce the expected output.

However, when I run an experiment (either attempting to use Monitor Center or with manual gamma correction), after several flips, colors seem to get darker. I don’t know if the two issues are related. Perhaps the calibration is being overwritten/unapplied.

Is this a known issue in PsychoPy 2024.1.4?

  1. Should gamma correction from Monitor Center be automatically applied when creating a window with monitor=testmon, or do I need additional settings?

  2. Is manual gamma correction the recommended workaround, or is there a proper way to make PsychoPy’s automatic gamma correction work?

Accurate color reproduction is critical for my work but I am new to PsychoPy and would greatly appreciate any guidance!

Thanks in advance!

It should be yes, in [2025.2](Release PsychoPy 2025.2.0 · psychopy/psychopy · GitHub) we’ve revamped and fixed a lot of issues with the monitor centre so it may be that upgrading will fix this.
